ADC and Derechos Digitales launch PubliElectoral Chilean 2021 Election report
The Association for Civil Rights (ADC), together with non-profit organization Derechos Digitales (Digital Rights), launched PubliElectoral – Chilean Elections 2021, a study on political advertising on Facebook during the last presidential campaign, and its compatibility with the current electoral regulations.
Through the app, data was collected on the ads posted on that social media platform and allowed us to monitor the impact of its use, the expense reports submitted to the election authority, and the compliance with the deadlines set for the campaign.
The analysis shows that all political forces used Facebook for campaigning and, thus, it has become a significant space in the election process. It should be pointed out, in addition, that there was no strict adherence to the periods established by the law for publishing announcements and that the public information available is insufficient to determine whether all digital advertising expenses have been duly reported.
The document makes recommendations for the improvement of the transparency instruments provided by Facebook/META, and also to the electoral authority as to the enforcement of current regulations, as well as its provisions in matters such as the reporting of campaign expenses and the availability of this information.
