ADC launches website «Online Civic Space»

The Association for Civil Rights has launched the microsite called Espacio Cívico en Línea (Online Civic Space), dedicated to analyzing domestic, regional, and global events that impact citizens’ rights to express themselves, associate, and meet through the Internet. All the information is available at espaciocivicoenlinea.adc.org.ar.

The platform includes updates on issues such as the criminalization of online speech, cyber patrolling on social media, and the concentration of decision-making power in private corporations. «Through the microsite, society will be able to learn about the current public and private threats that are affecting the way people express their opinions and search or receive information on the Internet. Besides, there will be analysis articles of the latest events that impact the daily exercise of free speech in the digital sphere,» said ADC researcher Eduardo Ferreyra.

On the other hand, the site centers on the protection of the online civic space as key to the promotion of diversity and inclusion. In line with this, ADC researcher Marianela Minales stressed: «This requires guaranteeing access and participation to a wide and diverse range of social actors. In this sense, promoting inclusion and diversity in the online civic space is a key factor in its protection. In other words, it bridges the inequality and the digital divides that restrain people of vulnerable social groups from participating, thus perpetuating violence and discrimination.»

«Online Civic Space» aims to be a reference for society in general, sharing knowledge on the protection of civil rights in the digital sphere. Through its content, users will find valuable information to ensure their freedom of expression and guarantee favorable conditions for the creation of online groups (freedom of association) and the exercise of the right to protest on the Internet (freedom of assembly).
