ADC and other organizations demand Buenos Aires City implement controls over surveillance systems

The Association for Civil Rights (ADC) and other civil society organizations demanded that the Buenos Aires Legislature create a monitoring committee of the city’s surveillance system as established by Law 6.339, which changed the regulations on the «Integrated Public Security System of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires».

The request was made after it became known that the city authorities had searched biometric data belonging to more than 7.5 million people without explanation of their purpose and under what norms they were carried out. In this sense, «it is deeply troubling that these surveillance technologies are currently used without the controls that the regulatory framework itself provides, putting the rights of the Buenos Aires people at risk «.

The aim is that the Legislature summon specialists and civil society organizations to examine and formulate proposals on the fundamental legal aspects regulating these technologies. The request was submitted jointly with the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (Legal and Social Studies Center – CELS), the Observatorio de Derecho Informático Argentino (Computer Law Observatory – O.D.I.A.), Fundación Vía Libre (Free Way Foundation) and Amnesty International.
