ADC attends meeting at Public Defender’s Office to discuss Media Consumer Rights

On May 16, ADC took part in the event titled «Protection of Consumer Rights in Digital Audio Visual Environments», held by the Public Defender’s Office.

The meeting took place at the Moreno-Frondizi Hall of the Senate annex building and gathered over fifteen speakers, including experts from academia, the judiciary, and legislators, as well as a large audience.

On behalf of our organization, project leader Marianela Milanés gave an account of the instruments comprising the business and human rights framework and the economic benefits of complying with it. She then cited the three pillars of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: the duty of government to protect them, of companies to respect them, and the joint commitment of both to an effective reparation in case of infringement.

Milanés also referred to the concept of due diligence in human rights, an issue on which ADC has made contributions and published several documents.

Finally, our emissary explained the mechanisms used for content moderation on internet platforms, pointing out that «many times automated solutions are implemented with little or no human intervention». Hence, the importance of considering the effects that a possible regulation may have in this regard.

The meeting was opened by the Public Defender Miriam Lewin, and attended by Gustavo López from the Communications Regulatory Authority –  ENACOM; Gustavo Gómez, from think-tank Observacom in Uruguay; attorney and telecommunications expert Henoch Aguiar; Guillermo Rus, from the National Telecommunications Company (Arsat); Margarita Trovato (Amnesty International) and attorney and professor Ricardo Porto, among others.
