ADC makes contributions to UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Association for Civil Rights (ADC) submitted five contributions to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a process held by the UN Human Rights Council aimed at improving human rights conditions on the ground in each of its 193 member countries. Three of the submissions were made on our own, while the other two were joint initiatives with other organizations.

The issues addressed in our presentations were:

– National Public Defender’s Office. We expressed our concern about the non-existence of this body and its serious impact on the defense of Argentinians’ human rights. In addition, we made recommendations to the Argentinian government to mend this situation.

– Freedom of expression. Together with IFEXALC, we submitted contributions showing our worry about the criminalization of expressions posted on social media and the deployment of intelligence and surveillance technologies to monitor and invigilate such expressions.

– Privacy protection. Jointly with Privacy International (PI), we raised concerns on four areas of interest: surveillance systems, security vulnerabilities in public databases, cell phone mining (MPE) apps, and health data.

On the other hand, we supported the presentation made by Asociación Civil por la Igualdad y la Justicia (Civil Association for Justice and Equality – ACIJ) on the Pulic Defender’s Office issue. And another contribution was made with Access Now on the right of access to information, data protection, and the right to privacy.
