ADC debates on activism against online gender violence

On the eve of the celebration of 25N (International Day ….), the Association for Civil Rights (ADC) participated in the webinar «Activism against online gender violence,» held by Wikimedistas Uruguay, Wikimedia Chile and Whose knowledge?, as part of the campaign «16 days of activism against digital gender-based violence.»

ADC project leader and researcher Marianela Milanes, spoke on a panel comprising attorneys Marianne Díaz (Access Now) and Ana Tuduri (Data Uruguay), among others, and referred to the challenges posed the issue: «Situations of gender violence in the digital sphere are a an extension of that which happens offline, not a totally new occurence demanding a specific response in itself.»

On the other hand, our rep referred to the comprehensive approach required: «There is consensus that the prevention, mitigation, eradication and reparation of this type of violence cannot be treated separately but as a whole, both in the real and digital worlds. Not only should we follow a sustainable course of action to prevent, mitigate, eradicate and repair, but also bridge the inequalities that lead to these occurences».

In addition, Milanés recalled that ADC has been promoting the inclusion of violence in the digital sphere as a specific type in the update of Law 26,485. Accordingly, she stressed that[Traductor1]  «until online violence is acknowledged as a type, it will be very difficult to generate statistics and information on its nature and scope, at least from government at the national level.»
