ADC meets head of AAIP and discusses Data Protection Law reform

On August 9, the Association for Civil Rights (ADC), represented by project officer Luis García Balcarce, met with the head of the Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP), Beatriz de Anchorena, within the round of debates launched by the authority with civil society organizations, public offices, academia and the private sector to initiate the reform of Law No. 25,326 on Personal Data Protection.

In the meeting, ADC underlined the need to continue participating in the development and draft of the project. In addition, it was pointed out that the law must contemplate the principles governing personal data handling, considering there is little awareness of how important protecting such data is.

According to the AAIP, the goal is to draw up a project for a new Data Protection Law that «responds to the latest challenges imposed by technological change and the growth of the digital economy,» while at the same time «complying with the highest regional and international human rights standards.»

During the next month, the public consultation process will be opened to guarantee effective citizen participation, following the provisions of Decree 1172/03. The AAIP website will include a comments section for stakeholders to add recommendations that may contribute to improving the new bill. ADC looks forward to an active involvement that leads to a reform safeguarding the personal information of all Argentinian citizens.
